i can see clearly now

My glasses broke on Saturday. This is a big deal, since there are very few things I can do without glasses. All weekend and this morning at Target I had to wear my prescription sunglasses. This might not be such an annoyance if it were actually sunny, but no luck. And it will never be sunny when driving to work at 3 a.m.

This morning after Target I went to the eye doctor. I have a pair of glasses on order and for now I’m wearing a pair of trial contacts. Luckily I wore contacts for years so it was no problem to put them in. However, the one in the right eye is not entirely comfortable yet – I have astigmatism in that eye and the eye doctor said it would take a while to fit comfortably (? don’t remember this before). The pressure in my eyes is also a little high. I wonder if glaucoma is in my future. I have a family history of it.

Also on Saturday, my cat started limping. She has cut one toe quite deeply and injured the ligaments. We are soaking it twice a day in epsom salts and keeping her inside. If it hasn’t improved by Saturday, the vet wants to amputate that toe.

In other news:

We sold our junker car and traded in my truck for a station wagon with a tape deck. I’m listening to all my old mix tapes from high school / college. Kinda fun.

And my stepdaughter moved back to Nevada four days ago. I have mixed feelings about it. It’s definitely a big change in our household.

Edited to add:

Additionally, I no longer have any hair (ok, no more than two inches), my dad just forwarded me info about a reporting assignment with the note “A fun morning awaits you” and there was more than a smidge of sarcasm implied, and I just got a zine order from Things You Say Distro with Scrappy #2, List #14, and Breakfast at Twilight #3. Good Stuff.

WE QWEERZ R EVERYWHERE

LOVED Tina Fey’s comments re: costar Tracy Morgan’s apology for recent homophobic standup act:

“I hope for his sake that Tracy’s apology will be accepted as sincere by his gay and lesbian coworkers at ‘30 Rock,’ without whom Tracy would not have lines to say, clothes to wear, sets to stand on, scene partners to act with, or a printed-out paycheck from accounting to put in his pocket.”

birthday post

Tukru posted a video of an accent meme, and I couldn’t resist recording my own (just audio though). Here’s the text:

Your name.
Where you’re from.
Pronounce the following words: Aunt, Roof, Route, Theater, Iron, Salmon, Caramel, Fire, Water, New Orleans, Pecan, Both, Again, Probably, Alabama, Lawyer, Coupon, Mayonnaise, Pajamas, Caught, Naturally, Aluminium, GIF, Tumblr, Crackerjack, Doorknob, Envelope, GPOY.
What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house?
What is a bubbly carbonated drink called?
What do you call gym shoes?
What do you call your grandparents?
What do you call the wheeled contraption in which you carry groceries at the supermarket?
What is the thing you change the TV channel with?
Choose a book and read a passage from it.
Do you think you have an accent?
Be a wizard or a vampire?
Do you know anyone on Tumblr in real life?
End audio post by saying any THREE words you want.

So yes, I am 28 today. I feel more like I’m in my 30s, though. My present from Dana is $30 to spend on music / zines. I ended up spending $20 on an audio upgrade for this blog, though. Silly WordPress.

In addition to my birthday, it is also the day Norwegians celebrate their country’s independence (my family is Norwegian / Swedish – apparently my grandma got the day off school as a kid) and the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO, ironically, a place where I experienced homophobia). Here’s what I posted to evil FB:

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has said, “Sexual orientation and gender identity raise sensitive cultural issues. But cultural practice cannot justify any violation of human rights. When our fellow humans are persecuted because of sexual orientation or gender identity, we must speak out.”

I set up a Last.fm account on Saturday (username sleepysaturday) and I am thoroughly enjoying the process of discovering new music.  The internet was down for most of yesterday and no access to Last.fm or Netflix instant caused me anguish. Oh,the horror!

friday the 13th

Sunny afternoons always perk up my mood. As I write, it’s a sunny Friday afternoon and I am all alone at the newspaper office.

One coworker stayed home yesterday and today due to debilitating back pain. One only works a few days a week. Our reporter mostly works from home. And my dad is out of town until Saturday. I much prefer other people and activity to be going on in the office, or the time really drags.

Lots of good blog reading yesterday about zine pricing…go here and here to read.

Dana signed up for a Netflix trial, and I found my new. favorite. show. ever.

feeling like eeyore

Well, I’m still down in the dumps today.

The big thing is my stepdaughter has dropped out of school and decided to move back to Nevada. This bums me out on two levels. First off, she won’t be living with us anymore, and also, we have no money or reliable car to drive her and her stuff to Nevada.

Secondly, we noticed some unauthorized transactions made with our debit card, so we have had to deal with that in the past two days and that is a pain in the ass.

Thirdly, many little details in life can be very depressing at times.

So here, look at pictures of a baby ferret dreaming of taking over the world.

haircuts and recipes and Faye Whitaker’s hair

Random mishmash of stuff:

I got my hair cut yesterday. I wanted it to look sort of like Faye’s hair from Questionable Content (like in this strip – Faye has glasses and gray shirt), but I’m not a comic strip character. So it looks like this:

Here’s my attempt to take the photo myself:

And I got my mom to write down some of my favorite Scandinavian Christmas recipes for a Christmas cookbook project a friend is doing as a fundraiser.

In case they are of interest:

Berlinerkranser (Norwegian Berlin Rings) (delicious with coffee)
5 cups flour
1 cup sugar
1 lb butter
4 eggs
1 tsp almond extract                                                                                                                         Pearl sugar (can be purchased at IKEA or Scandinavian markets, crushed sugar cubes work in a pinch)

Sift flour before measuring, then sift together flour and sugar. Cream butter. Add flour mixture gradually and mix well. Add four egg yolks and two egg whites whipped slightly, and then add extract. Mix well. Refrigerate dough until firm. Working with a part of the dough at a time, roll between palms of hands and lightly floured board into ropes half inch thick. Cut into 3 inch sections and turn into wreath shapes, pinching ends together. Whip additional egg whites. Dip wreath shapes into egg whites and then into pearl sugar. Bake on lightly greased baking sheets at 375 degrees for 10 minutes. Makes about 48.

Lussekatt (Saint Lucia Day Rolls)                                                                                                These are traditionally made with saffron, but my family uses cardamom instead.

1 cup milk                                                                                                                                              1/2 cup water                                                                                                                                            1/4 cup butter                                                                                                                                      4-5 cups flour                                                                                                                                             6 tablespoons sugar                                                                                                                                  1 teaspoon salt                                                                                                                                          2 packages dry yeast                                                                                                                               1 1/2 teaspoons cardamom                                                                                                                   1 cup mixed candied fruit (optional)

Warm milk, water, and butter to 120 to 130 degrees.  Put 3 1/2 cups flour, sugar, salt, candied fruit, cardamom, and yeast in Kitchen Aid mixing bowl. Attach bowl and dough hook to mixer. Turn on speed two. Add warmed liquids to flour mixture. Continuing on speed two add flour 1/2 cup at a time until dough clings to dough hook. Knead one minute longer. Cover bowl and let rise for 30 minutes. Turn dough onto floured board. Shape as desired. Let rise 20 minutes. Bake at 400 degrees for 12-15 minutes or until done. Yields about two dozen rolls. Drizzle with powdered sugar glaze if desired.

Powdered Sugar Glaze

1/4 cup butter (4 tablespoons)                                                                                                             2 cups powdered sugar                                                                                                                          2 tablespoons milk                                                                                                                                  1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Melt butter in a saucepan or microwave. Sift powdered sugar into a medium size bowl. Add the melted butter to the powdered sugar. Add milk. If desired, add vanilla for flavor. Beat until smooth and creamy. Spread over rolls.

Saint Lucia Day, celebrated on December 13, commemorates a Sicilian martyr from the fourth century. Its modern celebration is generally associated with Sweden and Norway. In the U.S. it is celebrated by families, churches, and colleges with Scandinavian heritages. It was commonly believed in Scandinavia as late as the end of the 19th century that this was the longest night of the year.

The eldest daughter of the family acts as Lucia, wearing a white dress, a red sash, and a wreath of candles in her hair. She brings her parents coffee and special rolls as breakfast in bed on the morning of December 13. The wreath of candles she wears in her hair symbolizes the fire that refused to take Saint Lucia’s life. In schools and churches one girl is chosen as Saint Lucia to lead a procession with singing and candles.

Saint Lucia was a devout Christian who refused to marry a non-Christian man. He turned her in to Roman authorities and she was sentenced to death by burning. The fire would not light, so a soldier stabbed her. Again she did not die. Eventually she was beheaded and died after receiving the sacrament.

In another story, Saint Lucia was working to help Christians hiding in the catacombs and in order to bring with her as many supplies as possible; she needed to have both hands free. She solved this problem by attaching candles to a wreath on her head.

coming home, or getting there.

The first time I moved back to my hometown was the summer after I graduated from college. Fresh out of school with a degree in natural resource management, I got a job working at a state park for minimum wage. Tourism was the area’s big industry, and I couldn’t find an affordable place to live. Eventually I found a place staying with a woman who offered me a room in exchange for working in her yard for ten hours a week.

I applied to work at the park because I thought I might be interested in a career as a park ranger. As it turned out, the job was crap. I cleaned incredibly dirty restrooms for six hours a day and picked up trash / mowed for the rest. The rangers treated us park aides like we were juvenile delinquents doing community service time (and I know this because we had kids doing community service, and they got treated the same) and apparently I looked sketchy because the moms clutched their kids’ hands when they walked into the women’s restrooms and saw me cleaning. And that made me feel very uncomfortable. At the time, my gender presentation was relatively ambiguous, so I think it’s most likely they thought I was a guy and that I didn’t belong in the women’s restroom. Or else they thought I looked like someone who was going to molest their children. (at the time, I was working through pain surrounding the religious community where I grew up, where there are many people who do think ALL gay people are child molesters. So I assumed other people thought that too.) Anyway, the scenery was nice, but the job was no keeper.

And the woman I was working for was unstable. She would act friendly towards me sometimes and other times would scream at me and accuse me of things. I tried to meet my end of the agreement but felt unsafe at home and tried to spend as little time there as possible. I kept trying to find another place to live but it wasn’t affordable.

Also, she lived in what appeared to be an all white housing development on an Indian reservation. To get to her house, I had to go through a guard station. I felt like the guard was there to keep the reservation residents out, and I was uncomfortable with it.

Eventually the woman kicked me out cuz she didn’t think I was getting enough done on her yard. I wasn’t too sorry about it other than I didn’t trust her at all. My brother came up when I packed up my stuff. We cleaned really well and took about a hundred photos of the condition of the room in case she decided I had done something and called the police. I was afraid she would decide I was trespassing and wanted to have an officer there when I moved out, but we decided against it.

Anyway, I decided to submit my resignation to my parks job, too. My grandpa was dying of cancer, my family was doing hospice care for him at home, and I thought that was infinitely more worthwhile than my crap job.

The park rangers were jerks about me quitting two months into the summer season. One said he thought I should have given a month’s notice for them to hire someone else cuz that’s what he would do. Thanks dude, only problem is I’m currently HOMELESS.  What the fuck. Another said all the out of area folks they hired turned out to be unreliable, so they should only hire locals. I ended up wasting a ton of money spending a week in the cheapest hotel I could find while working out my notice cuz I wasn’t brave enough to sleep in my truck. At no time did anyone mention me possibly camping at the park for free or a reduced rate.

And I came home for a month during which time I helped care for my grandpa and experienced the family insanity generated by the patriarch’s death. And it was one of the most transformative experiences of my life and totally worth it, but I was glad to head to Seattle after a month to start the Americorps position I’d already lined up.

The end.
